Stealing campaign signs is a Class A misdemeanor under Wisconsin Statute 943.20(1)(a) — the same level as theft of other personal property.
If your sign is stolen, report it to your local police department’s non-emergency number. Even if they can’t investigate every incident, a pattern of complaints helps law enforcement keep an eye out for repeat offenders.

Here are some ways to help keep your signs safe and visible:

• ✅ Place signs near your house, lights, or windows — visibility discourages theft.

• 🇺🇸 Add an American flag nearby or attach one directly to your sign for extra presence.

• 🪴 Secure it firmly: use landscape spikes or metal rebar instead of standard wire stakes.

• 🪤 Add deterrents: a light coat of non-toxic sticky substances like honey or Tanglefoot along the edges can make would-be thieves think twice.

• 🎣 Thread fishing line through the sign and anchor it to stakes to make removal difficult.

• 📸 Install a trail cam or small security camera focused on your yard.

• 💡 Use motion detector lights — a bright light can stop someone mid-grab.
